Protecting your home starts with the locks and keys you use to secure it. Depending on which doors around your property you are looking to secure, different kinds of locks will be necessary in order to offer your family the most protection. The locks you will want to have on the exterior doors of your home will be different from the ones you will use inside of your home. Consider the six most common lock types listed below and if your family might benefit from adding a certain lock type in order to increase your home security or personal privacy.
Single-Cylinder Deadbolts
You are likely already familiar with this kind of deadbolt lock. Single-cylinder deadbolts are one of the most commonly used locks. They are the best high-security locks one can purchase without needing to install electronic locks. For the majority of homeowners, deadbolt locks are effect at keeping one’s property secure and intruders from coming inside.
Double-Cylinder Deadbolts
Double-cylinder, or double-sided, deadbolts are less common, but they are necessary in certain circumstances. A double-cylinder deadbolt is just like a traditional deadbolt, except it has a keyhole on both sides of the lock. This means that a key is necessary to lock and unlock the door from either side.
While most homeowner will opt out of choosing a double-cylinder deadbolt because they are less convenient, there are times when they will be safer and more secure than a regular deadbolt.
For example, if you have a front door that has a window of some sort direct next to it, a double cylinder deadbolt is great to have. That way, a criminal cannot break the window, reach in and turn the deadbolt, and enter your home. While an intruder may still break your window with a double-cylinder deadbolt lock, they will not get very far after the fact, since they will not be able to simply turn a knob on the deadbolt and open the door.
Chain Locks
One of the great things about deadbolt locks is that they can be paired with other locks to reinforce them. Chain locks are often paired with deadbolt locks on front doors. This is especially true if your front door does not have a peephole, side window, or other means of looking out your front door without unlocking it. Chain locks are most often placed on apartment doors for this reason, but you may find one useful if you are a homeowner. They are inexpensive and easy to install. Their best perk is that you can still remain behind a locked door while being able to see and communicate with anyone that is on the other side.
Sliding Locks
If a chain lock does not appeal to you, you could also install a sliding lock. A sliding lock works similarly to a chain lock, except you do not have the ability to keep the door locked while seeing who is on the other side. These locks are good reinforcers for deadbolt locks and may also be helpful for certain interior doors inside of your home, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. Slide locks come in a lot of different styles and sizes. They are also very affordable and most can be installed by homeowners themselves in just a few minutes.
Knob Locks
Knob locks are typically used for bathroom, bedroom, and office doors, as well as other rooms around one’s home that may require privacy. Knob locks look exactly like doorknobs, but they have the option to lock. These locks usually do not operate with a key of any kind and are only used when someone inside of a given room wants to keep others out temporarily.
You should never use a knob lock by itself to secure the exterior doors of your home. Knob locks by themselves are not strong enough to withstand major force and can easily be broken if someone is determined to get inside. Knob locks will stop your family members from entering an occupied room, yet they will be lousy at stopping a criminal from breaking into your home. Always pair a knob lock with a deadbolt or an electronic lock if you have a knob lock on your exterior doors.
Window Locks
Window locks are important for any homeowner to consider. Depending on the type of windows that you have, as well as the layout of your home, you may need to invest more or less into securing the windows around your home. If you are unsure which window locks will serve your security needs best, schedule a consultation with a professional locksmith.
The latest and greatest locks that homeowners can own are electronic locks. These locks may also sometimes be referred to as smart locks, electronic deadbolts, or home access control. Every year, it seems that new electronic lock models are being made available to homeowners. Some can even be paired with security cameras, intercom systems, and user’s smartphones. With smartphone and wireless connectivity, homeowners can be on top of their security 24/7. The other great thing about electronic locks of any kind is that they are guaranteed to be more secure than any kind of traditional lock you might otherwise place on your home’s front and exterior doors.
